The Three Hs of an Influencer

by | Dec 6, 2018 | Events, Intellectual Property

I met an impressive speaker during the International Trademark Associations Leadership Meeting in November who provided a thoughtful message to the audience. Gustavo Giay is an attorney from Argentina at the law firm of Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal and a former member of the INTA Board of Directors. Mr. Giay shared with the audience the three Hs – Head, Heart, and Hands – and how they can be used to make a difference in this world.

Mr. Giay’s father was a member of Rotary International, a service organization that has made a significant impact throughout the world. It was from his father that Mr. Giay first heard about the three Hs, so consider this a lesson I learned both from Gustavo Giay and his father.

Each of us has a Head, a Heart, and Hands. How we use them throughout our lives can determine the impact we have on the world around us.

There is a secret to the three Hs formula. They must be used TOGETHER because:

One who uses only her HEAD, or Intellect, is a thinker.

One who is all HEART is a missionary.

One who only uses his HANDS is an operator.

One who works with her HANDS and HEAD is a technician.

One whose actions stem from the union of HEAD and HEART is a philanthropist.

One who uses her HEART and HANDS is an artist.

Only those who make use of the symbiosis of all three elements – HEAD, HEART, and HANDS – are well-rounded human beings, men and women who influence and make positive change happen both for their benefit and the benefit of others.

As an attorney, I work with many people who are more comfortable using their intellect (HEAD) daily. Some of those people will write a check to a charity or participate in a charitable event periodically and are wonderful philanthropists. But the individuals who truly make an impact in their businesses, families, and communities are those who know how to balance the use of their HEAD, HEART, and HANDS.

There are few people who have learned to balance the use of all three Hs, and they are phenomenal individuals. But we should all strive to balance how we use our HEAD, HEART, and HANDS so we can make the most positive impact on the communities in which we live and work.

Thank you, Gustavo Giay, for sharing this message.
