What should an employer do if an employee turns in I-9 documentation with different last names?

Here’s the official answer: “An employer may accept documents with a different last name as long as the documents are on the List of Acceptable Documents and the employer is otherwise satisfied that the documents reasonably appear to be genuine and to relate to the employee.  The employer should also create a short memo for the employee’s Form I-9 file stating the reason for the name discrepancy, along with any supporting documentation that the employee provides.”

That’s just one of the helpful answers from the I-9 Fundamentals Webinar. Interested in learning additional helpful immigration compliance information? Be on the lookout for more webinars in this series!
